Kitab kehidupan(3)

KJV: ‘And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book’ (= Dan jika ada orang manapun mengambil sesuatu dari kata-kata dari kitab nubuat ini, Allah akan mengambil bagiannya dari kitab kehidupan, dan dari kota kudus, dan dari hal-hal yang ditulis dalam kitab ini).

RSV: ‘and if any one takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book’ (= dan jika siapapun mengambil sesuatu dari kata-kata kitab dari nubuat ini, Allah akan mengambil bagiannya dalam pohon kehidupan dan dalam kota kudus, yang digambarkan dalam kitab ini).

NKJV menterjemahkan seperti KJV; sedangkan NIV/NASB/ASV menterjemahkan seperti RSV.

Adam Clarke (tentang Maz 69:29): “‘Let them be blotted out.’ They shall be blotted out from the land of the living. They shall be cut off from life, which they have forfeited by their cruelty and oppression. The psalmist is speaking of retributive justice; and in this sense all these passages are to be understood. ‘And not be written with the righteous.’ They shall have no title to that long life which God has promised to his followers” (= ).

Adam Clarke (tentang Wah 20:15): “‘Written in the book of life.’ Only those who had continued faithful unto death were taken to heaven. All whose names were not found in the public registers, who either were not citizens, or whose names had been erased from those registers because of crimes against the state, could claim none of those emoluments or privileges which belong to the citizens; so those who either did not belong to the new and spiritual Jerusalem, or who had forfeited their rights and privileges by sin, and had died in that state, were cast into the lake of fire. This is the way in which God, at the day of judgment, will proceed with sinners and apostates. Reader, see that thy name be written in the sacred register; and if written in, see that it never be blotted out” (= ).

Lenski (tentang Fil 4:3): “All God’s children are written in the Book of life. The Scriptures speak of blotting out of the Book of life when one ceases to be a child of God” (= ).

Pulpit Commentary (tentang Maz 69:29): “‘Let them be blotted out of the Book of the living.’ God is supposed to have a ‘book of the living’ in his possession, which contains the names of all those on whom he looks with favour, and whom he will bless both in this world and beyond the grave (comp. Ex 32:32; Ps 86:6; Ezek 13:9; Dan 12:1). From this list, as from any register of earthly citizenship, the names of the unworthy may be erased. David prays for the erasure of the names of those unworthy ones against whom his imprecations are uttered. ‘And not be written with the righteous;’ i.e. not remain written in the book side by side with the names of the righteous [= ].

Pulpit Commentary (tentang Kel 32:33): “Beyond a doubt, it is the general teaching of Scripture that vicarious punishment will not be accepted” (= Tak diragukan, ini merupakan ajaran umum dari Kitab Suci bahwa hukuman yang dijalani untuk orang lain tidak akan diterima).

Kitab Suci Indonesia salah terjemahan.

NIV: No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him - the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough (= Tak seorangpun bisa menebus nyawa orang lain atau memberi kepada Allah suatu tebusan untuknya - tebusan untuk suatu nyawa sangat mahal, tidak ada pembayaran yang bisa mencukupi).

Adam Clarke (tentang Kel 32:33): ‘Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out.’ As if the Divine Being had said: ‘All my conduct is regulated by infinite justice and righteousness: in no case shall the innocent ever suffer for the guilty. That no man may transgress through ignorance, I have given you my law, and thus published my covenant, the people themselves have acknowledged its justice and equity, and have voluntarily ratified it. He then that sins against me (for sin is the transgression of the law, 1 John 3:4, and the law must be published and known that it may be binding), him will I blot out of my book.’ And is it not remarkable that to these conditions of the covenant God strictly adhered, so that not one soul of these transgressors ever entered into the promised rest? Here was justice. And yet, though they deserved death, they were spared! Here was mercy. Thus, as far as justice would permit, mercy extended; and as far as mercy would permit, justice proceeded. Behold, O reader, the GOODNESS and SEVERITY of GOD! MERCY saves all that JUSTICE can spare, and JUSTICE destroys all that MERCY should not save (= ).

Pdt.

Lenski (tentang Wah 3:5): “As is the case in the rest of the seven letters, ‘the conquering one’ also here receives the great promise that is made individually to him. ... It has been asked what it is that these in Sardis conquer since neither persecution, heresy, nor fanaticism are mentioned in this letter. These are not the only foes. The great foes that threaten our spiritual life directly are carelessness, indifference, sleep and sloth, failure to remember, to keep, to continue in repentance, to avoid the world’s foulness. Are not these enough for us to conquer? They creep in with stealth and are thus most dangerous. Unrecognized, they often do their damage unseen. Open, blatent hostility we easily see and brace ourselves against its assaults; but inner decay works when no defense is made. Those are heroes who fight the open foes; but no less are those heroes who conquer the insidious, intangible creeping death” (= ).

Lenski (tentang Wah 3:5): “The idea of a book that records the names of God’s people and thus of having one’s name entered in this heavenly book and also of having a name erased, goes back to Exod. 32:32, where even the erasing is mentioned. Compare Ps. 69:28; ... To have one’s name inscribed implies divine certification of a position and of corresponding rights with the Lord. To have one’s name erased (ἐξαλείφω) is to lose both, and never to have it inscribed is never to have them. ... This book contains the names of all who have the true spiritual life. It is important to note that the statement is negative: ‘I shall not erase his name.’ This leads us to think of those whose names once appeared in this book but are now erased because they are dead (v. 1). Yet this negative is really a litotes regarding the living victor: his name shall ever remain in the book. It was written there when he was first begotten of the Spirit and the Word. Written thus, it assured him also of the eternal life in heaven. This is the same life (ἡ ζωή, definite, there is no other) that he has now (John 3:15, 16) by faith; but in our present state here on earth it may die out; if it remains in us, temporal death only transfers it into glory” (= ).

Adam Clarke (Wah 3:5): “‘I will not blot out his name.’ This may be an allusion to the custom of registering the names of those who were admitted into the church in a book kept for that purpose, from which custom our baptismal registers in churches are derived. These are properly books of life, as there those who were born unto God were registered; as in the latter those who were born in that parish were enrolled. ... ‘I will confess his name.’ I will acknowledge that this person is my true disciple, and a member of my mystical body. In all this there may also be an allusion to the custom of registering citizens. Their names were entered into books, according to their condition, tribes, family, etc.; and when they were dead or had by unconstitutional acts forfeited their right of citizenship, the name was blotted out, or erased fron the registers. See the note at Ex 32:32. (= ).

Herman Hoeksema (tentang Wah 3:5): “... the book of life. In that book, written before the foundation of the world, the names are written of those who are chosen unto everlasting life and glory. The names that are written in that book will, of course, never be blotted out. Nor does the Lord say that this is possible. He merely assures the faithful in Sardis that their names shall not be erased from the roll of God’s elect. Fact is that once upon a time also the unfaithful ones in Sardis had appeared as if they had been written in that book of life too: for their names had appeared on the roll of the church. Now, however, their apostasy and their walk in sin prove that their names had never been written in the book of life. Hence, not to be blotted out from the book of life represents the assurance that they had from all eternity been written in it and that the believers in Sardis may be confident that they shall find their names are written therein in the day of judgment” (= ... kitab kehidupan.

Steve Gregg (tentang Wah 3:5): “This is a difficult statement to harmonize with the concept of the believer’s inevitable perseverance. There are two classic ways to remove the impression that this passage denies the doctrine of perseverance of the saints. One is to suggest that the Book of Life is not the list of the redeemed, but rather contains the names of all people living at a given time. Removal of one’s name from the book would thus signify physical death but not damnation (but cf. 20:15). A second suggestion is that the warning is merely hypothetical - meaning that no one will ever have their name removed in actuality, since it is not said that some will have their names removed, only that some will not (but cf. 21:19)” [= Ini adalah pernyataan yang sukar untuk diharmoniskan dengan konsep dari ketekunan yang pasti terjadi dari orang percaya. 21:19)] - hal 74.

Catatan:

Ro 8:37).

Calvin: “John says (Rev 3:5, 22:18): Whoever has sinned, I shall delete him from the book of life. If, says Georgius, you apply this to the reprobate, they never were written in the book of life; if to the elect, the counsel of God is unstable. He then concludes that there is no certain election. So babbles this monk, as if God did not always accommodate Himself to our understanding” [= Yohanes berkata (Wah 3:5, 22:18): Barangsiapa telah berdosa, Aku akan menghapusnya dari kitab kehidupan. The Eternal Predestination Of God’, chapter IX, no 5 / hal 151.

Catatan:

KJV: ‘And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book’ (= ).

RSV: ‘and if any one takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book’ (= ).

Hanya NKJV yang menterjemahkan seperti KJV, sedangkan NIV/NASB/ASV menterjemahkan seperti RSV.

Barnes’ Notes (tentang Wah 22:19): ‘God shall take away his part out of the book of life.’ Perhaps there is here an intimation that this would be most likely to be done by those who professed to be Christians, and who supposed that their names were in the book of life. In fact, most of the corruptions of the sacred Scriptures have been attempted by those who have professed some form of Christianity. Infidels have but little interest in attempting such changes, and but little influence to make them received by the church. It is most convenient to them, as it is most agreeable to their feelings, to reject the Bible altogether. When it said here that ‘God would take away his part of the book of life,’ the meaning is not that his name had been written in that book, but that he would take away the part which he might have had, or which he professed to have in that book. Such corruptions of the Divine oracles would show that they had no true religion, and would be excluded from heaven” (= ) - hal 1729.

Lenski (tentang Wah 22:19): “He testifies that God will add the very plagues that are written in this book to him who adds to the things (αὐτά) constituting this book. Likewise, that God will take away anyone’s part in the life and in the Holy City, anyone’s part in the blessed things written in this book (τῶν γεγραμμένων is dependent on τὸ μέρος αὐτοῦ), from anyone who takes away from the words of this book. The consequences following upon either act are the same. They are expressed in terms of exact justice: he who takes away - God shall take away; he who adds - God shall add. A just God cannot do otherwise. Note that ἀφελῶ is the future of ἀπαιρέω (R. 356); also that οί λόγοι does not mean mere vocables (Woerter) as found in a dictionary but ‘words’ as thought-bearers (Worte), statements. He cannot keep the words of this book (v. 7, 9) who ruins them by injecting other things or casts some of the words aside” (= ).

2.   Apakah orang kristen yang sejati bisa kalah? Jelas tidak mungkin. Bandingkan dengan:

Barnes’ Notes: “‘Let them be blotted out of the book of the living.’ That is, Let them cease to live; let them not be numbered among the living men; let them be cut off. ... The language has no reference to the future world; it is not a prayer that they should not be saved. ‘And not be written with the righteous.’ Let them not be registered or numbered with the righteous. ... The language is evidently derived from the idea so common in the Old Testament that length of days would be the reward of a righteous life ..., and that the wicked would be cut off in the midst of their days” (= ) - hal 230.

Keil & Delitzsch: “Let them be blotted out of ... that is to say, struck out of the list of the living, and that of the living in this present world; for it is only in the New Testament that we meet with the Book of Life as a list of the names of the heirs of the zwh aviwnioV (= ) - hal 285.

Calvin: “he denounces against them eternal destruction, which is the obvious meaning of the prayer, that they might be blotted out of the book of the living; for all those must inevitably perish who are not found written or enrolled in the book of life. This is indeed an improper manner of speaking; but it is one well adapted to our limited capacity, the book of life being nothing else than the eternal purpose of God, by which he has predestinated his own people to salvation. God, it is certain, is absolutely immutable; and, farther, we know that those who are adopted to the hope of salvation were written before the foundation of the world, (Eph. 1:4;) but as God’s eternal purpose of election is incomprehensible, it is said, in accommodation to the imperfection of the human understanding, that those whom God openly, and by manifest signs, enrols among his people, ‘are written.’ On the other hand, those whom God openly rejects and casts out of his Church are, for the same reason, said ‘to be blotted out.’” (= ) - hal 73-74.

Calvin: “Yet I do not deny that the Spirit sometimes accommodates the utterance to the measure of our understanding - for instance, when he says: ‘They shall not be in the secret of my people, or be enrolled in the register of my servants’ (Ezek. 13:9). It is as if God were beginning to write in the book of life those whom he reckons among the number of His people, although we know, as Christ bears witness (Luke 10:20), that the names of the children of God have been written in the book of life from the beginning (Phil. 4:3). But these words simply express the casting away of those who seemed the chief among the elect, as the psalm had it: ‘Let them be blotted out of the book of life; let them not be enrolled among the righteous’ (Ps. 69:28; cf. Rev. 3:5)” [= ] - ‘Institutes of the Christian Religion’, Book III, Chapter 24, no 9.

Catatan:

·         Luk 10:20 secara hurufiah seharusnya adalah ‘your names have been written in heaven’ (= namamu telah tertulis di surga).

C. H. Spurgeon: “the inner meaning of being blotted out from the book of life is to have it made evident that the name was never written there at all. Man in his imperfect copy of God’s book of life will have to make many emendations, both of insertion and erasure; but, as before the Lord, the record is for ever fixed and unalterable” (= ) - ‘The Treasury of David’, vol 2, hal 184.

Matthew Poole: “In this book men may be said to be written, either, 1. In reality, by God’s election and predestination. Or, 2. In appearance, when a man is called by God to the profession and practice of the true religion, and into covenant with himself, and professeth to comply with it; ... And when a man renounceth this profession and religion, he may be said to be ‘blotted out of’ that ‘book’, because his apostacy makes it evident that he was not written in it, as he seemed to be. ... men may be said to be ‘written in’ or ‘blotted out of this book’, when they seem to be so by the course of their lives and actions. But that this ‘blotting out’ is not meant properly and positively, is clear from the last branch of this verse; which, after the manner of these books, expounds the former, wherein this doubtful phrase is explained by one which is evident and unquestionable, even by his not being ‘written’ in it; for it is impossible that a man’s name should be properly blotted out of that book in which it was never written” (= ) - hal 110.

Psalm 69:28 (KJV): ‘Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous’ (= Biarlah mereka dihapuskan dari kitab kehidupan, dan tidak ditulis dengan orang benar).

W. S. Plumer: “To ‘be blotted out of this book’ is the same thing as not to ‘be written with the righteous’. The clauses are parallel” (= Dihapuskan dari kitab ini adalah sama dengan tidak ditulis dengan orang benar. Kedua kalimat itu paralel) - ‘The Psalms’, hal 684.

Pulpit Commentary memberikan penafsiran yang berbeda / bertentangan. Ia berkata: “‘And not be written with the righteous;’ i.e. not remain written in the book side by side with the names of the righteous” (= ‘Dan tidak ditulis dengan orang benar’; artinya tidak tetap tertulis dalam kitab itu bersama-sama dengan nama-nama orang benar) - hal  55.

Keil & Delitzsch: “To blot out of Jehovah’s book, therefore, is to cut off from fellowship with the living God, or from the kingdom of those who live before God, and to deliver over to death” (= ) - hal  231.

Dalam tafsirannya tentang Kel 32:32, Calvin berkata: “By ‘the book,’ in which God is said to have written His elect, must be understood, metaphorically, His decree. But the expression which Moses uses, asking to be blotted out of the number of the pious, is an incorrect one, since it cannot be that one who has been once elected should be ever reprobated; and those lunatics who, on this ground, overturn, as far as they can, that prime article of our faith concerning God’s eternal predestination, thereby demonstrate their malice no less than their ignorance. David uses two expressions in the same sense, ‘blotted out,’ and ‘not written:’ ‘Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.’ (Ps. 69:28.) We cannot hence infer any change in the counsel of God; but this phrase is merely equivalent to saying, that God will at length make it manifest that the reprobate, who for a season are counted amongst the number of the elect, in no respect belong to the body of the Church. Thus the secret catalogue, in which the elect are written, is contrasted by Ezekiel (13:9) with that external profession, which is often deceitful. Justly, therefore, does Christ bid His disciples rejoice, ‘because their names are written in heaven,’ (Luke 10:20;) for, albeit the counsel of God, whereby we are predestinated to salvation, is incomprehensible to us, ‘nevertheless (as Paul testifies) this seal standeth sure, The Lord knoweth them that are his.’ (2Tim. 2:19)” (= ) - hal 361-362.

Dan tentang Kel 32:33, Calvin berkata: “In these words God adapt Himself to the comprehension of the human mind, when He says, ‘Him will I blot out;’ for hypocrites make such false profession of His name, that they are not accounted aliens, until God openly renounces them: and hence their manifest rejection is called erasure” (= Dalam kata-kata ini Allah menyesuaikan diriNya sendiri dengan pengertian pikiran manusia, pada saat Ia berkata ‘Aku tidak akan menghapuskannya’; karena orang-orang munafik membuat pengakuan palsu tentang namaNya supaya mereka tidak dianggap sebagai orang asing / non kristen, sampai Allah secara terbuka menyangkal mereka sebagai anak: dan karena itu penolakan yang nyata ini disebut penghapusan) - hal 362.

Puji Tuhan.
